Meet the heart behind Moofushi’s Reef, Marine Biologist Vinita Singainy
This World Ocean Day, Constance Hotels & Resorts shines a light on one of the ocean’s most passionate guardians: Vinita Singainy, the resident Marine Biologist at Constance Moofushi, Maldives.
Originally from Réunion Island and Mauritius, Vinita’s connection with the sea runs deep—woven into her upbringing and fuelled by a life-changing discovery beneath the waves.
“The moment I went scuba diving and saw the reef up close, I was captivated. I knew I wanted to understand it, protect it, and share its beauty with others,” Vinita recalls.
Her journey led her from academic research to hands-on conservation work across coastal regions, particularly in the Seychelles. Drawn by the Maldives' breathtaking biodiversity and the urgent need for reef protection, she found her calling at Constance Moofushi, where sustainability and guest engagement walk hand in hand.
No two days are alike for Vinita. Her mornings might begin with a reef monitoring dive or a snorkelling safari with guests. Afternoons often include coral restoration work, marine education sessions, or collaborative sustainability projects with the team.
Her passion? Making conservation tangible for everyone.
“Guests can join coral planting experiences, take part in reef clean-ups, and learn how even their smallest actions can support marine life,” she explains.
Among the many marine marvels around Moofushi, Vinita has a soft spot for what she calls the “Nemo Garden”, a lively patch of reef teeming with clownfish, anemones, and a symphony of reef activity.
“It’s proof that even small, protected spaces can thrive with life. It reminds us that little efforts can make a big difference.”
From daily dives to magical encounters, one memory still takes her breath away: swimming with over 25 reef manta rays.
“It was like floating through a dream—graceful giants gliding around us. Moments like these remind me why I do what I do.”
As Vinita points out, the ocean produces over half the world’s oxygen, thanks to tiny phytoplankton, an often-overlooked truth that underscores the theme of this year’s World Ocean Day: Wonder – Sustaining What Sustains Us.
“The ocean gives us so much—life, oxygen, food, climate balance. It’s time we give back.”
Vinita’s call to action is simple yet powerful: “Let’s treat the ocean not as a resource to exploit, but as a treasure to protect. Even the smallest actions—like reducing single-use plastics—can help preserve the wonder of the ocean for generations to come.”
At Constance Moofushi, that message is more than a motto—it’s a way of life.
