Constance Moofushi is taking a proactive step towards marine conservation with its latest sustainability initiative for 2024, emphasising the importance of using reef-safe sunscreens.
Recent studies have shown that common chemicals found in many sunscreens pose a significant threat to coral reefs and other marine life.
Chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate have been identified as particularly harmful. They can lead to coral bleaching, a process where corals expel the algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn white and, in many cases, die. This not only affects the corals but also the myriads of marine life that depends on healthy coral ecosystems.
To mitigate these impacts, we at Constance Moofushi, recommend guests to use reef-safe sunscreens, which are formulated with non-toxic, natural ingredients that do not harm marine environments.
Harmful Ingredients to avoid:
Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, PABA, Parabens, Triclosan, Nano-sized particles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide
Safe Alternatives to opt for:
Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide
Our initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage our guests to make environmentally conscious choices even before they arrive at the resort. We are proud to announce that we have 202 coral frames in water and are excited to continue this growth.
